The University of Ghana’s Earth Science Department has taken steps to strengthen its partnership with the Petroleum Commission, opening new opportunities for
mentorship, leadership development, and practical training to prepare students for the energy sector.
The delegation, led by Graduate Chair of the Department, Professor David Atta-Peters met with the Commission to outline closer collaboration that can bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practice.
Outlining the purpose of the visit, Head of the Earth Science Department, Professor Prince Ofori Amponsah, reflected on the Department’s sevendecade record as Ghana’s foremost trainer of geoscientists and stressed the importance of aligning academic training with industry needs.
“For over 70 years, we have produced Ghana’s leading geoscientists. Today, our task is to go further and design short courses, mentorship and leadership programmes that will directly meet industry needs. Partnering with the Petroleum Commission will ensure our students leave with both knowledge and the confidence to make
meaningful contributions,” Prof. Amponsah said.
Welcoming the proposals, the CEO of the Commission, Ms. Hardcastle underscored the regulator’s commitment to nurturing local talent. “Mentorship and leadership are just as important as technical training and working with the University, we can give students a clearer picture of the industry, share our experiences, and prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities ahead”, she noted.
Further discussions also focused on the Department’s new global mentorship programme which will link students with seasoned professionals across the petroleum and allied sectors.
This initiative intends to bring Commission staff and industry experts to dedicate brief sessions with students, offering guidance on career choices, industry expectations, and the realities of professional life.
Both institutions agreed to deepen cooperation through training programmes, internships, mentorship, and support for research and field activities. This partnership is expected to bridge the relationship between academia and industry, while equipping young professionals with the skills and exposure needed to support Ghana’s energy future
