Petroleum Commission Engages Stakeholders on Sustainable Ocean Governance

As part of its commitment to sustainable ocean governance, the Petroleum Commission participated in a stakeholder engagement meeting yesterday with the Fisheries Commission and the consultant for Ghana’s National Marine Spatial Plan (MSP).

The MSP, funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), aims to enhance cross-boundary cooperation, strengthen marine resource management, and build climate resilience across six West African coastal states.

Discussions focused on aligning the MSP with Ghana’s upstream petroleum operations, particularly in offshore spatial planning to minimise conflicts between fishing activities and oil and gas operations.

Other key areas included data sharing on offshore infrastructure and collaboration on environmental monitoring and oil spill detection.

The Petroleum Commission is ready to contribute its technical expertise, operational data, and regulatory input to ensure the successful implementation of the MSP. This will strengthen marine governance and promote sustainable offshore activity,” said Ag. Deputy CEOMr. Nasir Alfa Mohammed, who chaired the meeting.

In highlighting opportunities for mutual benefit, the National MSP Consultant, Dr. Kwame Adu Agyekum, introduced satellite-based tools for oil spill detection, maritime surveillance, and protection of subsea assets, all to be made available to the Commission at no cost.
