The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), led by its Ag. Director General, Mr. Isaac K. Mwinbelle, engaged the Petroleum Commission in discussions to explore areas of collaboration in the exploration of the Voltaian Basin.
Mr. Mwinbelle reaffirmed GGSA’s mandate to advise, promote, and conduct research on geoscientific issues relating to mineral resources, groundwater, the environment, geo-hazards, and land use planning.
“The GGSA possesses valuable legacy data on the Voltaian Basin and operates a land drilling rig capable of drilling shallow wells, which could complement recent data acquired over the basin,” Mr. Mwinbelle explained.
On his part, the Ag. Deputy CEO of the Commission, Mr. Nasir Alfa Mohammed, emphasised the significant oil and gas potential of the Voltaian Basin, noting that it remains insufficiently explored. “The Commission acknowledges the significant contributions of the GGSA in enhancing our understanding of the basin’s geology. I am also pleased to announce that we have recently entered into an agreement with GNPC to promote and market 2D seismic data from the Voltaian Basin to prospective investors,” he stated.
Mr. Mohammed further proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions to formalise their collaboration.
Such a framework he noted, would ensure effective data sharing and joint promotion of the basin’s petroleum potential.
Both institutions expressed optimism that a strengthened partnership would accelerate exploration in the Voltaian Basin, unlock new opportunities, and ultimately contribute to Ghana’s long-term energy security.
