The Ghana Football Association has made an earnest appeal to the Petroleum Commission to support the development of Ghana football. The call was made during a courtesy visit earlier this morning led by GFA President, Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku. According to the GFA President, the request aligns with President John Mahama’s renewed national rallying call for broader support for sports, especially football.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Okraku explained that football remains one of the most influential spaces for national unity, youth development and corporate visibility. He noted that investment in domestic games has a direct impact on the quality of football at all levels. “Our call on the Petroleum Commission is inspired by President Mahama’s appeal to every Ghanaian and every institution to support Ghana sports.
Football is a strong social and economic force and investing in it is not only meaningful but strategic. When corporate bodies support the premier league, it dovetails into higher forms of association football and strengthens the national teams” he said.
The GFA President added that the vision for the game goes beyond competitions and touches on talent development infrastructure growth and long-term football business reforms. He encouraged the Commission to partner the Association to deepen the progress of these uniting sports.
In response, the Ag. Deputy Chief Executive of the Commission, Mr. Nasir Alfa Mohammed assured the GFA delegation that their request would receive the necessary attention. “I will fully brief my boss, the Chief Executive on the details of your visit. Once that is done the CEO will consider escalating the matter to our governing board.
The board will then take a final decision on the level of support the Commission can provide,” Mr Mohammed stated.
He expressed admiration for the Association’s renewed push for collaboration and highlighted the impact football continues to have on community development and national identity.
Supporting this submission, the Director of Finance at the Commission, Mr. Vincent Yankey confirmed that the institution has an annual budget for corporate social responsibility and therefore the framework exists for possible support. “We do budget for CSR activities every year so once the approval is secured the principle exists for the Commission to support Ghana football. Your proposal fits within areas we consider for social impact so it will be examined accordingly,” Mr Yankey affirmed.
The meeting ended on a warm and symbolic note as the GFA delegation presented replica Black Stars jerseys to the Petroleum Commission. The presentation was done as part of efforts to rally national enthusiasm ahead of next year’s global soccer festival to be hosted in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The GFA expressed hope that the new engagement will mark the beginning of a long-lasting partnership aimed at elevating Ghana football and expanding its reach and influence across the country.
