Management of the Commission at a brief ceremony earlier today has handed over
a refurbished Girls’ Dormitory to authorities of the Akropong School for the Blind.
This gesture is in response to an appeal in 2019 and a subsequent visit to ascertain the
scope of work in the school. Works began in earnest in April 2020 and were completed in
September last year. Although the refurbished facility has been in use, the ceremony
was postponed due to restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following approval by the Board, an amount of GH¢200,000 was allocated to
complete all refurbishment works, with the hope that the renovation and improved
sanitary conditions will contribute to a more conducive learning environment for the
students.
“We are proud to have undertaken this project. Though this is not much, it is the
beginning of better things to come. We hope with the assistance we have provided,
life will be a little more bearable for the students.” CEO of the Commission, Mr. Egbert
Faibille Jnr. said in his remarks to the authorities.
“We remain lifelong friends. Do not hesitate to call on your corporate friends for
assistance when the need arises,” he added.
In response, the recently assigned headmistress of the school, Ms. Rosemond Dery
expressed gratitude and assured that authorities will maintain the current standard of
the dormitory.
“We are very grateful to the Commission for coming to our aid. For a moment I
thought this dormitory was a new block that was recently built until I was informed of
the good work that you have done for us. The dormitory has been so nicely
renovated; we are most grateful,” Ms. Dery said.
The Akropong School for the Blind is a special needs school for the visually impaired
located in the Eastern Region. The school relies on Government’s subvention and the
benevolence of corporate bodies, faith-based institutions, groups, and individuals for
support in their bid to provide quality education to its students.
